One Dumpsterful of Art | An Art Dump

Image
Hey hey! I haven't posted any art updates on here in an AGE, so here are some art things I've done over the last couple of months. Some doodles I did in my art notebook: a Draw This In Your Style that my sister suggested for me, some doodles of a cartoon character that has my new hair, and an emo girl? I guess? I copied the roses on her face from a Snapchat filter that looked super cute. My first time messing around with oil paints(yep, they take forever to dry), and a window painting I did for my mom for Easter. That window took so many pieces of tape and so much scissoring to get right lol. Tony Stank On the left, some haikyuu-inspired art that I did while I was messing around with my paint markers, and on the right a cute lil mermaid I did for mermay. I used the manga art of Ichigo Takano, who wrote the manga series Orange, for the art style on the mermaid. More mermay art. I used the prompts #mermaidizeafriend, #angelic, and #beached. it explode a self portrait    ...

Some random writing tips

Image
Put your phone far enough away that you can't reach it because being too lazy to get up > desire to reach phone = you'll be forced to write Listen to Hans Zimmer soundtracks, they're literally written to keep you engaged and they help you focus When you're line editing, put things that will take more thought [in brackets] so that later you can just search the documents for the brackets and find all those things at once. If you're stuck on one thing in the document, go to a different thing and work on that. Your mind will be clearer to deal with the problem when you come back. If you're struggling to begin something, even an outline(cuz I do a lot), title it like this: Outline 1, But This is the Sucky Version . If you give yourself permission to suck or outline it in a way where if it's the worst it doesn't matter, it makes it so much easier to begin. Don't open the word document or look at the page until you already know how you're going to be...

The Fandom Taggggggggg

Image
Well well well, I'm back again! Thought you'd gotten rid of me, hadn't you? (fool) My dear dear sister Rachel  tagged me to do this post, and she knew I was looking for a reason to scream about all the niche fandoms I'm in, so I'll take it! Let's talk fandoms. The Rules -Include the graphic somewhere in your post -Answer the questions -And tag two fellow fan people to answer them too! The Questions 1. What's the first fandom you remember becoming a part of? Narnia!! Narnia has been a huge obsession of mine since I was super small, I distinctly remember every Narnia movie and book in existence, my favorite may be the Last Battle(I know, sorry)... Narnia is unbeatable good, what more can I say? seratonin: boosted 2. What's the newest fandom you've come to enjoy? I'm taking this as being the most recent fandom I've come to enjoy in my life, not the newest thing to come out, because I'm not super sure how to interpret this. One of the fandoms...

some things I've learned about descriptions from googling 'how to describe things'

Image
Something I'm learning from this current draft of Robbing Centaurs and Other Bad Ideas is that I'm really bad at descriptions. I underdescribe, I overdescribe, I put in confusing visuals, my sentences are awkward... I'm just really bad at descriptions. And now that I think about it, descriptions are something that have always been really frustrating for me to try to write. I can picture all these cool places and ideas, but I have no idea how to make the reader see and feel them the way I do. It's probably one of the most frustrating parts of writing for me. Therefore, after seeing all the notes from my sweet editor on descriptions that could be improved, I did a hearty bit of googling on how to write descriptions. This is what I found.  Give the description a flow. Your MC spots another character in the room. What do they notice first, and why? What do they notice after that? Don't just say 'their hair was black and their eyes were blue', that doesn't wo...

Why pain and sadness is so attractive in stories

Image
Photo by  Serkan Göktay  from  Pexels Quick note: this post is a bit of a brain dump, it's not as well thought out as some of my other posts, but I wanted to get it out of my head, so enjoy XD Here's the main thing: characters who have pain and face hardship are the characters we tend to cling to the most, the ones we like the most. So why is that? My opinion, and the short version of the answer, is this: we love them the most because the pain they feel is familiar. Pain is part of life, a big part of life, and it will continue to be until the return of Christ and a time where His people will go up to live in heaven. We all know some kind of pain, everyone has experienced something in their life that tried to break their spirit and block out their light. No one will make it out of this life unscathed. Those are the facts. So if the characters feel pain, we can identify with that. Even if what they're going through isn't something we've ever experienced, we can still...

Old WIPS...... especially the ones I'm never coming back to

Image
Let's talk about some old WIPs of mine! Why? Who cares why! This list is in more or less chronological order of when I've written them, but it's actually roughly in order of how much I like them, or them as they are right now, unedited and possibly never seeing the light of day again. But still, whether or not they will see the light of day, I still wrote them and that gives them importance, so let's talk about them and give them a little love!  Trilagia How old I was: Roughly 11 through 12 Yeah, this was the first thing I ever wrote, and clearly, at the time I didn't know anything about a series or the fact that you had to know where it was going in order to write it, but these books are still dear to my heart even though I shall never read them again or I shall explode from cringe. Amarah was the first awesome short spunky girl character I ever wrote, and also the first lil gremlin we should not trust with matches. I also got to explore worldbuilding in this one e...

uh, so i accidentally disappeared... my bad XD

Image
Hey hey hey, I'm back!! I disappeared, mostly by accident, and before we go back to our sort of regularly scheduled programming, here's my brief explanation for why I've been gone:  Basically, I was getting overwhelmed. You could also say I was overwhelming myself, since the whole writing thing is self-employed(self-inflicted, if you will XD), and I was just getting so drowned by life and trying to build my platform and editing and trying so hard to stay afloat. It was a little crazy. Therefore I had to make a few cuts and take a few breaks to make my brain a good and habitable place again. To sum up those cuts: I'm almost entirely cutting out Twitter. Twitter is just not a very happy place for me anymore, being on there at all was starting to feel like a constant risk, so I'm not going to be there very much anymore. If you loved the funny tweets I put on there, have no fear! I'm trying to channel that energy a different way now, so you should watch this video...
