Moments of Vulnerability For Your Character

Image
There's just something about people when they're vulnerable, isn't there? And I love to see characters vulnerable. It's kind of like peeling off an extraneous level of their character and getting to see what's underneath. A deeper section of the character. I love it. So if you want to add some moments of vulnerability for your character, I have got the list for you. Just out of the shower (and I'm NOT talking about when they're caught in a towel. Not attractive. I'm talking about when they've just changed back into their clothes and they're just a little cold and their hair is still wet.) While reading a book. Especially if it's a book they love. There's a certain way people look when they're reading a book. While sick. If you've come to this list for cute moments for the couple you're writing, this one's perfect. One of them looking after the other while they're sick is so very sweet, and no one&#

How To Be A Writer (A Ridiculous Humor Video I Thought Of When I Was Supposed To Be Sleeping)

Image
Okay, so I had a weird idea at like 10:30 pm the other night for a video and I was like 'why not?' so I took approximately 1 hour out of my life like two days later and made a video for you. I hope you enjoy it. The video should appear just above this text. If it doesn't you might need to go directly to my blog and not view it on mobile/in your email. Alternatively, you could watch it at this link here: How to be a writer . (the video will also be bigger there, too, since Blogger insists on showing all videos at size 0) I hope you loved the video! Consider giving it a thumbs-up or a comment, or just comment on this post here to let me know if you want to see more like this! See you on Thursday, provided that I remember to write a post. ;)

Outlining Characters 101: How I Outline Characters (A Simple But Effective Format)

Image
Scary question: How do you outline a good character? Don't worry, it's not the format's fault if your character isn't so great. A bad format might prevent you from thinking of a few details that might have helped you flesh out a character a little further, but it's not the format's fault if your character wasn't interesting. I think the most important part of creating characters is figuring out what kind of character questionnaire works the best for you. Over time, slowly crafting my own has been so fun. It's a little fuzzy around the edges, but it's mine, and I want to share it. The best thing about this character questionnaire is that it's not that long. I've worked with so many character questionnaires before that had 50, even 100 questions. That's too many. I felt like the longer I worked at them, the less clear the character felt in my head. That's why I think simple but deep ones work so much better.

How To Write An Asthmatic Character(As Written By An Asthmatic)

Image
Hi, I'm Bethany, I'm an asthmatic, and I'm here to    e d u c a t e  y o u So the inaccurate way asthmatic people are portrayed in stories really bugs me. They shouldn't be taking their inhalers for nothing, and certainly not every thirty seconds. I would dearly love to see a realistic asthmatic character, one that I can identify with and laugh with. I would love that. So. Your education on asthma begins now. What is asthma? Good question, I'm glad you asked. From Mayo Clinic: Asthma is a condition in which your airways narrow and swell and produce extra mucus. This can make breathing difficult and trigger coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath. So basically, my airways have less room to breathe in than yours, so I'm constantly at risk of having them suddenly close up or fill with mucus, therefore causing: an asthma attack. An asthma attack happens when either my tubes produce too much mucus(filling the airways) or when my tubes cons

Things Retail Workers Wish They Could Tell You

Image
First, a meme to start this post: Having worked in retail for a year and a half, there are some things that I wold love to tell the customers. Common sense mostly. Occasionally how to take a long walk off a short pier. If you've ever been in retail, Karen's the worst, right? If you haven't, please read and try to learn so that one day I won't be staring into your soul with all the warmth and geniality of Freddie Kruger. Things Retail Workers Wish They Could Say Please don't take your problems out on us. Why thank you for that recommendation of how we should change the policy of our store. I'll just catch a flight tomorrow to go talk to my close personal friend, the owner of the company. 👍 If you're going to come in five minutes before closing, please handle everything you touch with care(we just straightened that) and check out before  we tell you that the store is officially closed(we would like to go home sometime before

Wick And Archer- Another Short Story

Image
WE HAVE ANOTHER FLASH FICTION HEREEEEEEEEEEEEEEE ARE YOU STOKED? I'M STOKED. Today's flash fiction is just something random I wanted to do. It has a little more of a plot than the last one, so I assume you could call it a short story. Wick and Archer have bought a spell that will enable them to talk with their past selves- but will they like what they see? So without further ado, here's the piece for you! Click right on the image to be taken to the story, and read away! Well, that will be all for today, ladies and gents. Did you enjoy? I sure hope you did. Writing these has been so much fun! So now we part ways for the time being, and I'll see you on Thursday, so long as I can think of a topic for a post!  The first Wick and Archer flash fiction I posted:  https://scribbledfiction.blogspot.com/2019/12/archer-and-wick-bit-of-flash-fiction.html A brief overview of the main WIP: https://scribbledfiction.blogspot.com/2019/11/an-introduc

how I did with 2019's goals and my goals for 2020

Image
Honestly I don't know if people read posts like this or not *laughs uncomfortably because I know I normally don't* but everyone is doing one of these and it sounded fun, so we're going to do it anyway!! My goals for 2019 were: _____________________________________________________ Get a car Did I do it? I did!! In early October of 2019 (a lot later than I was planning to hehe) I bought my own car!! Her name is Jiji, and she is blue and beautiful! She has a beanie dragon in her back window and re-usable bags in her trunk! She has a soot sprite plushie hanging from her rear view mirror! She takes me places and for that I am so grateful! :D :D :D Finish Crash and Burn and publish it Did I do it? I did!!!!! When I got to the point where I knew I could make a deadline, I decided on Saturday, May 25th, and publish it I did! It took a lot of hard work(and admittedly, a bucket of tears), but I did do it, and I think it is beautiful! Since then I have persuaded

Motivations for Female Villains That Aren't Centered Around Jealousy or Heartbreak

Image
Females are people, just the same as everybody else. And so are female villains. So there's a thing people are talking about right now concerning female villains and their motivations. They're pointing out how the motivations of most lady villains are centered around one of two things: 1) Men who broke their hearts, or 2) Jealousy over a female who's more beautiful than them. Both sound kind of shallow and have been overused to the point where they're almost eyeroll-worthy. I mean, let's genderbend this for a minute. If a man was destroying lives and chasing people down because he was angry over a girl who broke his heart or because(even better) he was mad that another, more handsome man existed, he would look crazy! Or stupid. Or both. It would be absurd. So why is it acceptable the other way around? Let's fix this. I've got a few ideas for you to consider. Motivations for Female Villains 1. Protecting home and hearth. Call me weir

A December Wrapup (Bye, 2019! 😭)

Image
So December was first too long and then too short. Like, what happened here?? There was like 2 and a half weeks until Christmas and then all of a sudden it was December 20th?? What?? Let's explore what I managed to squeeze into that weird warp to time. Writing *Sticks my head inside the writing hemisphere* *coughs over all the dust bunnies* *pulls head back out* Um. So. I didn't write much this month at all. Why? Well, I wanted to take a little break from writing after NaNoWriMo due to the HUGE amount of writing I did in November. It was only supposed to be like a week's break and then I'd get back into editing Jack, Thief's Son with new rigor. Orrrrr, that was supposed to be the plan. A week turned into two weeks and every time I looked at the second draft for Jack  it dawned on me what a plot hole I'd worked myself into. The plot hole made me freeze up creatively, and I'm still in that hole so, surprise! I still haven't written anything.
