Things Only Extroverted Writers Understand

Image
There are many kinds of writers out there in the world, but what's something no one ever talks about? extroverted writers. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that I'm probably not the only one in the world. And while I'm happy that the introverts are uniting, we extroverts need to know we have people out there too. So here you go, my extroverted friends. This one's for you. Problems only extroverted writers understand: Hanging out with people vs. getting writing done              I have writing to do today, but I was also invited to go somewhere. Hmmmm. I'll just write like a crazy person up until I have to leave, and then all I'll be thinking about while I'm out is how to fix that plot hole. Wanting to talk about your writing with friends. . . but knowing better.               The great conundrum of the extroverted writer. You want to talk about your #wip so. Bad.  But! Your friends aren't writers, and you know if you st

'Escapism'

Image
Escapism. People talk about this a lot when they're talking about books. Or graphic novels. Or fairy tales. Stories in general. If you just google 'books to escape reality quotes,' you'll see what I mean. Every day people use stories to get away from their troubles and see a happy ending. But it seems like the way escapism is viewed today seems a little wrong. So let's talk. What is 'escapism'?  Dictionary.com  defines it as 'the avoidance of reality by absorption of the mind in entertainment or in an imaginative situation, activity, etc.' Basically, using something you enjoy to get away from it all. Every so often (or sometimes, very  often), we all need a break from our problems, and stories are a great way to distract us. For a short amount of time, we can dive into a different world and watch the characters as they defeat monsters, travel great distances, and fall in love. We can have a different life for a few hours before going back t

The Mess Inside My Desk (The Messy Desk Tag)

Image
What is up, my word warriors? How's your writing going? Today we have more of a fun post, and I hope you enjoy! I think I'll turn it into a tag (or at least try to), because while I've never had enough guts to participate in a tag, I've seen plenty of them and I think it would be fun to see everyone else's mess. The concept is, take some candid pictures of the inside of your desk or whatever you use to file your writing materials and post them to your blog. Here we go! This is my desk. There are three drawers in my desk dedicated to writing stuff. The fourth one is just craft stuff ( ) Big drawer first, and this has the most stuff in it of the three. Yeah, look at all that crap. First, we have my folder of world maps I've drawn. The really weird-looking ones are towns and castles, in case you're wondering, but don't zoom in too much on the picture. Some of the maps are really bad and need to be redone.  Next we have my folder

Characters in Books Have Too Much Money

Image
I'm going to say it straight out: lots of book characters have too much money. Throwing extravagant parties, going on huge shopping trips and maxing credit cards... I mean, what is this??? It might be the reality some people live, but it's certainly not realistic for most. It's going to cause your readers to question how realistic your book is to actual life, and more importantly, for a lot of people, it's just going to seem unrelatable. So let's talk about how you can fix this, using... wait for it... a list !!!    1. Think about the characters you already have. Do your characters extravagantly spend money, or expect their parents to do so? Is your MC upset because her parents haven't bought her a car yet? Perhaps she could be altered to having her parents match what she makes and putting it toward a car, or she could even earn it all herself!    2. They don't all have to be the same. Not all of them can be rich, and not all of them have to be de

What is up, my peoples? I don't know if you noticed, but it's a new year! Happy 2019! In remembrance of last year, which was my first year as a blogger, here are the most popular five posts I did! 1.  Busting Writer Myths: Protagonists Can't Have Parents 2.  11 Things Writers HATE 3.  Busting Writer Myths: The Mentor Has to Die 4.  My Thoughts on Writing Every Day 5.  Things You Realize When Editing a Novel I'm seeing a trend of my most popular posts now, and good news! They're the ones I like to do the most, so all of you who read my posts seem to share my interests. *warm fuzzy feeling activated* I'm super glad that number 5 made the list especially since I really loved that post. Furthermore, in reflecting upon last year, I realized that despite how much content I try to put on my blog, most of it is kind of impersonal and y'all don't really know a lot about me. So, therefore, I made a video about it! It's 18 fun facts about me, and
