Five Underused Characters For Your YA Novel

Image
Photo by  Daniel Nieto   from  Pexels More for the Underused series! I'm really loving this series, because I love reading posts of this kind, and writing them is even better!!!! So today we're doing YA characters, because we all know there's only about ten of them, and they're all a little bland. Let's add some flavor to these books by making more of these guys: The teenage grandma. She drop pearls of wisdom. She knit. She bake cookies. She take you in when you overcoming breakup. She fabulessssss. But no lie, you gotta love the old-soul girls who are basically your old grandma, but in a teenage girl's body. Bonus points if you can find a way to make a teenage grandpa character. The blonde murder child. I will forever adore the blonde murder child. She or he(but I like it best when it's a she) is smol and cute and they seem like the most innocent pure thing at first glance. BUT NO. This character is a force of nature. She(we're going with

Blogger Confessions

Image
I have been blogging for about two years now(Yay me!), and there are a lot of happy things as well as a lot of frustrations that go with it. Blogging was on the brain this morning, so writing about blogging is what I'll do! Confession #1: This gets frustrating for me sometimes.        Honestly, blogging- and tweeting, Instagramming, just trying to get myself out there in general- is so hard. I'll sometimes look over at someone else, someone who has had a blog for only a year and has hundreds of readers, or someone who has way fewer posts on social media than myself but has hundreds of thousands of followers, and I wonder how they did it. I'm trying really hard, aren't I? I post consistently. I network as much as I can. But I don't have that big of a following. Anywhere. At least not yet. Confession #2: Sometimes I don't want to write posts at all.        This normally happens on Mondays. Thursdays, not so much, but Mondays, so often. I'll get up

5 Romantic Cliches To Beat Off With Pepper Spray

Image
Yeah, I know I've talked about romantic cliches before, but not in this series! (This heavily-spread-out series that I never seem to be done with, anyway) Some of the ones in this post are ones that are harmful, and others are ones I'm just sick of. So let's get into it! 1. Abusive relationships. I can't talk about this enough. Abuse is not romantic, is not funny, is not okay. If someone's getting beat up, whether it's physically or emotionally, the relationship should either be over or head straight to counseling. 2. They're clearly not in love, don't even like each other, but the writer puts them together. I've been noticing this a lot anymore. If one of the characters in the relationship is meant to end up with a different character, the relationship they're in seems. . . strained, to put it nicely. The two of them always seem like they're not in love, not in like, not even friends. They just kiss or live together or something un

My Favorite Book/Movie Characters (and why they're awesome)

Image
Normally my Thursday posts just discuss whatever the heck happens to be on my mind as far as writing, but today my brain contained only thoughts of how I'm going to edit this duology, accompanied by a semicolon and an emoticon. And as a semicolon and an emoticon are very little to write a blog post about, my sister and I put our heads together and decided that I should write the post about my favorite book and movie characters. Today we're just discussing ten of them. Maybe another time when I don't have a topic I'll do another ten. That would be awesome. So let's talk about ten of my favorite characters and why they're amazing. Valkyrie ( Skulduggery Pleasant ) I could talk about Skulduggery Pleasant all day. If you haven't read this series you must find them and read them immediately. It's about a living skeleton and all his allies with their magical powers and there's a lot of battling evil overlords and coming up with witty come

Sending Your Novel To Beta Readers As Shown In Gifs

Image
Can you tell from my stint of posts about editing that I'm back into it? Now that Crash and Burn is officially out, I've started work on a duology that I wrote a bit ago about a thief named Jack. It's going to need a lot of work... But anyway, enough about me, let's talk about beta reading! Or complain about it. Or laugh about it. Or whatever. Things You'll Only Get If You've Sent Your Novel To Beta Readers (written in chronological order, for your convenience and amusement) The terror of the sending. Thinking of three more questions right after you've sent it. The waiting. Complete with a lot of anxiety. Any or no feedback you might get while they're still reading. (Is it better to get feedback, or better to suffer through the silence?) Finally receiving the feedback email. Putting off reading said email. *agressively does literally anything that is not spelled 'reading the email'* Finally opening the email

A Complete List of Writer Terms For the Confused

Image
MC. POV. Midpoint. What the heck are all these writers talking about?? They're throwing strange words right and left, and you have no clue what they're trying to say. I recently realized how much writer terminology there is out there. We writers use a lot of terms constantly without thinking about all the confused people there might be out there. So, whether you're a writer just starting out or a family member/significant other who is just trying to understand what their loved ones are trying to say, this list is for you. It's in alphabetical order if you're looking for something specific. So let's begin! A Complete List of Writer Terminology Antagonist - The one opposing the protagonist(see Protagonist ). Bear in mind that an antagonist and a villain (see villain ) are in fact different kinds of characters. While a villain is a character pitted against the protagonist because they are directly enemies with said protagonist, an antagonist is a char
