About one of my MCs- Meet Wick

If you didn't hear already, I published a new book back in August. So exciting! And I recently realized(due to reading a similar post by a friend) that I haven't shared much about the story or the characters to my blog in a while. So, for those of you who haven't read Robbing Centaurs and Other Bad Ideas, and even some of those of you who have and love some fun facts, let's talk about Wick.

1. Wick is a certified SoftBoi

Out of the pairing, Wick is the soft child, and Archer is the savage. Wick just wants everything to work out and everyone to do what they're supposed to so that the world will be okay. He protects his friends and thinks all scenery everywhere is beautiful. He loves everything he sees. He's just a cutie.

2. He loves cooking

For the first half of the book, Wick is something called a leshy(think walking tree people), and that's his natural form. But for various reasons that you will just have to discover when you read the book, he changes what he looks like using a leshy magic called transmogrification. For the second half of the book, he looks more like the tall blond we all know and love. Once changed into a human, he discovers our best-kept secret-- food is amazing. And with just a little bit of knowledge, he can make whatever food he wants and combine whatever flavors he wants. He is enchanted by food.

3. He has few friends

Wick's job as a messenger is to carry information and documents from one end of Aro to the other and everywhere in between, and he's been doing it most of his life. As a result, he hasn't had a lot of time where he's stayed anywhere in particular, and he really hasn't had time for forging deep friendships. He knows a lot of people, and since he's very good at his job he even knows some important people(think monarchs and leaders), but he isn't close with any of them. They're just people he knows because of his job.

The few friends he does have are mostly people he knows from training for his job. His childhood friend Twill went to the same training for messenger work as he did, but Twill is far more outspoken and strong-willed, and she lacked the diplomacy required to work the messenger job, so she quit the training and now works as an artist. Another friend of Wick's is Eland, a young centaur from the valley. Eland is a lot like Wick in thinking and in spirit, and they get along well.

4. He's usually a favorite of the more level-headed people

This is less a fact about Wick and more just a piece of fun information, but something I've noticed as more and more people have read RCOBI is that there are two camps of people: the Wick fans and the Archer fans. The interesting part is that from the people I know personally who have read the book, which character you prefer depends on your own personality. The people who like Archer are the free spirits and the rule-breakers and love his chaotic and reckless nature. However, the people who like Wick more are the leaders and the peacemakers, and they understand his struggle with Archer's attitude and his desire to make everything go right.

5. He's a very poor decision-maker

Wick is a messenger and a helper, and he was never taught to make choices for himself. He helps others make choices, and he watches others make choices, but for the most part, it isn't his job or his place to make the big decisions himself. He waffles to make even small choices in his own life, and when it comes down to it to decide the fate of Aro(wink wink read the book), he is majorly out of his element. In addition, he doesn't take well to failure, and trying to make the right choice to avoid any consequences makes decision-making all the harder for him.

6. A powder keg about to explode

Wick would never tell anyone this, but he has a terrible temper. Because of his job and because he doesn't like confrontation, he does his best not to get in disagreements with anyone, but since he's so used to avoiding conflict, he is terrible at handling it when it is time to fight. Once he loses it, Wick loses it, and as is seen throughout RCOBI and into the sequel, World Saving and Other Disasters, when he feels properly threatened he turns into a feral little beastie. It's great fun to write.

Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed learning more about our boi Wick. Let me know if you want to see character trivia like this for any other characters in RCOBI, or any of the people I mentioned here. I was also thinking of doing some fun facts about the various creatures that live in Aro, so let me know if you would like to see that as well!

All righty, I must get back to prepping for NaNoWriMo, have a wonderful day!
