The Small Wins of a Writer

Greetings, my writer friends. How is your writing going? Poorly, you say? Stuffing your hand in a bucket full of acid and nails would be less painful, you say?

Well, I have good news for you! Today we're talking about the small wins we writers get, even when it's not a good day. There are small successes everywhere that we're not recognizing. And a positive mindset is an important part of actually getting to the end of the book! So let's talk about those small wins!

  • You wrote today. Even if it was three words in a happy birthday card, you got your creative juices flowing. You exercised your brain. And if those three words were in your novel, that's even better! Those are three words that you didn't have before. Those are three words that you don't have to write later in order to finish the novel.

  • You enjoyed writing that scene, even if you eventually had to cut it out for the good of the novel. You explored that path, and you enjoyed it, even if it's not going to be in the final draft.

  • Even if all you did today was brainstorm, and you got no writing done at all, that's progress! You might not be able to see it yet, but the things you thought about will later play a part in the final idea.

  • You have some pretty amazing characters. It's impossible to have written as much as you have and hate all the characters. There has to be at least one that really speaks to your soul, that you feel is one of your children because you built them out of pieces of you.

  • That moment when you write something you're proud of. The title is so eye-catching, or that description just flowed so beautifully, or that quote the mentor said is something you want tattooed on your arm. Or it might not just be one thing. You might love that one character's voice, or every scene in a certain setting. There's always something.

  • Even if all you did was Pinterest and pin a thousand things to your aestheticy board for a certain character, you understand that character better now, don't you? You have a few more quirks for them, a new favorite book for them to read, a sweater for them to wear in a certain scene.

  • If you wrote nothing, if you didn't even think about writing, remember that rest is important. You don't want to burn yourself out, and maybe taking a break will give you a different perspective.

  • Or, if nothing else I've written here has liften your spirits, think about this: You are a writer. Consider that. You write, and you love it, even if today might not have been the best writing day. You enjoy this craft, and you haven't given up.

These are the small wins of a writer's everyday life, my friends! Revel in them, for small wins + small wins = BIG wins! Now, I release you to the normal world again! Fly away, my writerlings! Be free! Write your three words! Pin things to your storyboards! Enjoy it! And I will see you on Monday!
